Will Microsoft be forced to make IE standard compliant?

Tag: Web developmentBogdan @ 12:22 pm

Since I have switched to XHTML and standard compliant sources for the websites I create, I have lost like hundreds of hours becaue of IE, the hacks needed for it, and so on. Well, who hasn’t?

Apparently, about 2 weeks ago, Opera has filed a formal complaint with the European Commission to force Microsoft to support open Web standards in its Web browser, Internet Explorer. But this is not all. The long discussed topic of freeing IE from Windows is back again, as Opera once again, requested in their complaint that Microsoft frees IE from Windows because they restrict the right of genuine choice of browsers on the we, as Windows is bundled with IE from start.

Web developers and designers now create huge, rich web applications, and because of IE and it’s usage percentage, the work becomes frustrating as it doesn’t support web standards. Designers have to spend lots of hours to fix IE bugs instead of creating new websites for internet users.

What’s new about this kind of complaints is that Opera is not looking for any money from Microsoft.

So, spread the word of this to all your web developer friends and partners, and may be in the near future we will have the ability to create websites that work seamlessly on all devices, browsers etc. If we support Opera, that day may not be far away.

Numeration bases calculator and converter, on Google

Tag: Web developmentBogdan @ 7:05 pm

Search results for math.bogdanpop.infoOk, so 7 days. Only one week. This is what it took for my web application, the one released in my previous post Math converter / calculator, to hit the first page in Google’s results. This seems great doesn’t it? I also checked my traffic statistics, and apparently, 150 people have used it in the past week, which is way above what I expected when I released it.

PS: search results here.

Cheers!

Club FG with Clamaran, on holiday.

Tag: DJ-ingBogdan @ 12:13 pm

I think that last night FG aired the third consecutive pre-recorded show of Antoine Clamaran, that was already aired few weeks ago. Apparently, he is on a world tour and cannot send to FG new sets, so you will have to think twice before hitting the listen live button again.

However, I listened last week to Roger Sanchez (Release Yourself- Fridays, midnight to 1 AM GMT +2) and the show is also very interesting.  Don’t forget about Didier Sinclair, Sandy Vee and Fred Pelichero. You can check the FG program here.

Anyway, FG has made forget about DI FM progressive channel, but these days, I might go back to it to check it out once again.

PS: I think in a few days I will post my charts for 2007, and possibly a mix.

Cheers!

Do people use web 2.0 wisely?

Tag: Web developmentBogdan @ 9:55 pm

No. Or at least, most of them, don’t. And this article will explain why.

First off all, if used wisely, web 2.0 concepts and features prove to help a lot a website to grow, evolve. Any web developer wishes this for all the projects developed. Unfortunately , not all web developers actually know what web 2.0 is about.

  • Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just retrieve information. They can build on the interactive facilities of “Web 1.0″ to provide “Network as platform” computing, allowing users to run software-applications entirely through a browser. Users can own the data on a Web 2.0 site and exercise control over that data. These sites may have an “Architecture of participation” that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it. This stands in contrast to very old traditional websites, the sort which limited visitors to viewing and whose content only the site’s owner could modify. Web 2.0 sites often feature a rich, user-friendly interface based on Ajax, Flex or similar rich media. The sites may also have social-networking aspects.

So indeed, web 2.0 features can help, but many web developers should focus on “web 1.0″ aspects of the site and do them correctly. Everybody tends to build every aspect of the site by the “laws” of web 2.0 because they follow up a trend. Just like in fashion, but I am sure you have seen and you see everyday people that try to dress up in Armani while they should be in Adidas.

So why on Earth do we need e-commerce websites that use drag and drops to buy items, when most of people who try to shop online are having a big problem when it comes to register before they can buy anything.

Of course, fancy animations, cool features like drag and drop work very well for different applications we all use each day on our PCs, but if we design a website, do we need to add drag and drops and all sort of effects to each byte of text? If we want to confuse the users, than yes.

One good aspect of web 2.0 features and technologies are, for example, partial updates to a page. AJAX allows developers to change and update only a small part of one page at a time, so this means that the user will require less traffic to do what he needs to do with that website. This also means faster response times, and we know that the faster you do things, the better. But it is better only if the users know what’s happening.

Take for example websites like Amazon. They are over cluttered, they offer you a web search engine (if I needed one I’d go to Google, not Amazon) and tons of other information you do not need. It would possibly be just about ok (wait… who I am kidding here), but they also have lots of web 2.0 features implemented, fancy scrolling (like apple’s coverflow),  and many other features I myself find hard to work with. For example, they have this button, “add to wishlist”, but I am not sure how to use it. I can’t click it but I know I have to use it from the “options to the left”. If I cannot find them, how is a 45 year old bus driver going to find them?

So, big companies go wrong about their websites, small companies go wrong as they follow up these big companies, so we are pretty much doomed.

My point is that each websites doesn’t need to be 100% web 2.0. It is enough to have only  a few web 2.0 features, and it will be great. Therefore, perhaps web applications should have a big percent of the web 2.0 features, but government or corporate websites, if I may say, shouldn’t have that much of the web 2. features. If I would develop a government website, I will use web 2.0 only for fancy contact forms, or any other forms, just not to let the user type over and over again until he gets the job done.

So, once again if you forget this rule, you should really focus on what the user wants, not what you want, or what the trend is like.

Math Converter/Calculator

Tag: Web developmentBogdan @ 9:33 pm

Ok, so in the previous post I wrote something about a math converter/calculator tool that I wrote in PHP. I have finished the backend back then, about a week ago, and since then I have found a couple of minutes of spare time to add a simple css and a simple design.
Hope you will like it and you will find it useful. If you do use it, it would be nice if you linked back to it.

PS: math converter/calculator web app. Sorry, no manual yet, but I am sure you can figure out how to use it. If anyone wants a quicklook on the sources or to buy them, just contact me.

Cheers!

I’m a Mac

Tag: Web developmentBogdan @ 9:59 pm

Ok, so on the previous version of the site, there was the web development page, into you could have read at the bottom of it that in the future I will probably switch to Macintosh to improve my productivity. My MBP, Ipod Video and Ipod Shuffle

After I read like tons of reviews and articles, I finally decided to buy myself a shiny new 2,4 Ghz MBP. Yeah, I know it is the best they got, but I got used a few years ago to keep my finance all together, don’t waste lots of money, and waste them big on expensive, good quality products.

So far, I haven’t had any regrets.

This is the first post of a set of reviews for this MBP that I intend to write. So, I’ll skip the part in which I say good stuff about Leopard, because I am speechless.

However, I do want to say that TextMate and Spaces have improved my production speed by 600%. Yeah, I have completed the backend of a web app (Convertor/Calculator in any numeration base) in about 6 hours. Actual coding took not more than 1 hour. Right now I am setting my snippets for TextMate and when I have a new free weekend I’ll finish the interface for it.

Then I will release it to general public.

Conclusion. There’s no conclusion, as this post is similar to “hello world”.
Cheers!

Why FG Radio is the best

Tag: DJ-ingBogdan @ 7:32 pm

So, I am a huge fan of electro, as you can figure out from the dj page. I have been listening to FG Radio since May (2007) I think. I even went on a eurotrip through France listening to FG Radio. Of course, there are shows I don’t like at all, and there are others I can’t live without (mainly club FG with Antoine Clamaran and Didier Sinclair).

But the show I have just listened to was purely amazing. It is, of course, Club FG, but the djs hosting it are Fred Pellichero and Sandy Vee. Their show ended 20 minutes ago, and since then I’ve been YouTubing, MySpacing and Googleing for them and their mixes and releases.

You should really give them a try. To help you out, here are a few links:

Don’t forget, tonight (Saturday) starting midnight, GMT +2, you can listen live Club FG hosted by Antoine Clamaran.

Cheers!

Google pagerank updates done manually

Tag: Web developmentBogdan @ 5:43 pm

Ok. So first of all, based on the research and information provided by SEO Company, the last pagerank update was supposed to take place sometime back in July (5 months ago). The lag is huge if we think that previous pagerank updates occurred at a 3 months frequence.

The one and only Google update thread was restarted over and over on the v7n network as each month, the awaited world-wide pagerank update never came. Of course, if you have the time to read that topic, you’ll se here and there some web developers saying that one out of their websites has received a pagerank update, or downgrade. And unfortunately, most of them were downgrades.

At first I didn’t think that their websites were updated, just because I couldn’t check if what they said was true. But this thing has happened to me too in the past 2 weeks, and this is when I came to my senses and realized a couple of things.

First of all, one of my domains now has a “No pagerank information available” for its root. The strange thing is that it used to be a pagerank 4 website. At first I thought that site went into the dark forces of the “Sandbox”. But no, all the other pages of the site are even at this moment pageranked 4.

Secondly, my personal website got a pagerank 4 for the root and pagerank 3 for its subpages (DJ,Photography etc) and I can’t see a reason for it. I don’t think I have ever submitted it to one directory, I don’t think I have ever used a forum signature with a link-back to it, and so on.

Thirdly, I read a couple of days before some topics about the new issue that arises next to Google banning websites, banning which is done manually as a result of the paid link reporting tool that came available a few months ago on Google’s site.

  1. Everyone can report as containing paid links competitors sites so that they loose pagerank. Their loss, your gain.
  2. The report goes to Google, and some employees review it and take action, which is definitely subjective. They are not judges, and don’t abide to any rules. They simply think and pick: paid / not paid.

The so called good thing is that Google has recently added a new feature, and if you somehow (see above list) got banned from Google, you can ask for reinclusion of your site in Google’s white list. The bad thing is that this request goes again to a person, which again is subjective. If he/she is having a bad day, you won’t get your site back in SERPs.

To fight against this issue, Izea (aka PayPerPost) made an official statement:

“We now know from some of our friends inside of Google (thanks “bob”) that they are now looking for phrases such as PPP, PayPerPost,ReviewMe, Payu2blog, etc. in the text of your post. For that reason I would suggest refraining from using any type of this text in the body of your posts, sponsored or not. When you disclose thank the sponsor, not PPP. ”

So, it looks like Google has changed its entire pagerank algorithm. It isn’t based anymore on backlinks, their relevance and so on. It is based on pure subjectiveness and on a “if you have paid links or not on your site” lucky guess.

My question is: Why isn’t Google banning websites containing Google ads? Oh dear! How naive of me to ask such things. They are simply eliminating their competition. Who wouldn’t want just for themselves a 42 billion dollars industry.

My conclusion: Sometime within the next year everyone will stop linking externally, googlebot will visit only sites submitted via the online page submit form, and the very relevant results will disappear. All this just for a big pile of money.

Cheers!
